Robbin Cools
Geel

At only 30 years old, Robin Cools has already made a name for himself in the demanding world of speed. Between his job as a machine operator at ArcelorMittal ESP Geel and his passion for pigeons, he found a delicate balance. His schedule in two teams (6h-14h one week, 14h-22h the next) did not leave him much freedom, but they opened a clear path for him: to devote himself fully to the queen of speed.
Its dovecote, located in the province of Antwerp, at the gateway to Limburg, is in the very heart of the world's speed mecca. Where every Sunday, tens of thousands of pigeons compete and where winning a prize is the same as winning gold.
A simple method, but without compromise

Robin is not looking for complications. His system is clear, efficient, and above all adapted to his pace of life:
- Only one flight per day.
- Young people are never hidden.
- Progressive and regular workouts, without overloading.
- Pre-season youth training: 3 km, 6 km, 10 km, 10 km, 10 km, 17 km, 22 km, twice 33 km, then three times 77 km.
- Old workouts: 6 km, 10 km, 10 km, 20 km, 20 km, 80 km, 97 km.
- First competitions: as early as April, while the young are still in the nest. Males and females fly together, not looking for the immediate result but to prolong widowhood as long as possible
.
- A meticulously managed total widowhood, extended as long as possible to keep the pigeons motivated.
- Observation: Robin knows each of his proteges “like the back of his hand.”
- Selection: after four competitions the best remain in Quiévrain (126 km) and a team is destined for the competitions in Noyon (220
km).
And above all, an unchangeable principle: never demoralize a crack. When an ace is revealed, male or female, his partner stays at home. Robin prefers to maintain motivation than to risk “breaking” an exceptional pigeon.
At the start of the season, pigeons are forced to fly for one hour a day. Then, they fly by themselves, without constraint.
At the end of the championship (beginning of August), the pigeons are put back in the house for a clean brooding. No late season youth are raised.
In terms of health, Robin consults his veterinarian at the start of the season but refuses any blind treatment. If treatment is recommended, he follows it. Routine, he administers yellow drops after each competition, one in each nostril. Mandatory vaccinations: twice PMV-Rota, once Herpes.

Strong competitions, fierce competition
Robin evolves in a formidable relationship:
- 100 dovecotes spread over 5 clubs (20 to 25 members each).
- Up to 1,000 old people at the start of the season and 900 young people per competition.
Interprovincial releases every Sunday: more than 20,000 pigeons together, over a radius of 130 km wide and 120 km deep; This gives pigeons that must take their direction from the first meters of the race and have that iron will to break away from the crowd to return home.
At the Verbond agreement, Robin plays against the best, every week. Competitors? Names that command respect:
- Luyckx Raf & Lars, triple general champions of Belgium
.
- Team Hooymans BE, recognized worldwide
.
- Vansant Ludo, the man to beat
every season.
- Clément Vandeperre,
always at the forefront.
In this context, every first prize won by Robin is worth gold. His pigeons must learn to detach themselves from the crowd to return directly to the loft, without letting themselves be carried away by the neighboring contingents.
A colony built around a female founder
The Cools strain is based on a female from 2011, from Rijck Jan. A true matron, she is at the origin of a line of cracks.

Another key breeder, BE13-6132624, Roux's half-brother, is omnipresent in pedigrees. The results speak for themselves: the Cools family collected the 1st prizes and won the podiums.

Today, the colony is based on twenty breeding pairs and as many widower couples, for two youth tours each year (40 + 40). No winter breeding: Robin prefers to focus on quality rather than quantity.

Atypical, but optimized installations [caption id="attachment_10860" align="aligncenter” width="716"]

Robin's pigeon houses are installed in former horse boxes, a remnant of his grandfather's trotter breeding. While these rooms are not ideal (cold and humid in spring), Robin has learned to deal with them.
He practices total widowhood with an ingenious system: the females join the males through a small hatch and spend the rest of their time in an outdoor aviary.
Hygiene is impeccable during the season: daily cleaning, strict discipline. At the end of the season, Robin voluntarily relaxed the pressure to strengthen the natural immunity of his pigeons.
A pigeon fancier with a future
Robin Cools perfectly embodies the new generation: passionate, meticulous, rigorous, but also pragmatic. His secret is not a miracle method, but a coherent management, adapted to his time and his pigeons.
In the most competitive province in the world, he succeeded in doing well. Each first prize won in Antwerp is worth a world medal, and Robin knows that better than anyone. With a growing colony and a solid base, Geel's future could well live up to its name.
